Hooked

There are two habits we cannot seem to break the little V-meister of:
  1. Taping her artwork to every inch of wall space in the house.
  2. Sucking her thumb.
We thought we might curb the interior decorating compulsion by cutting off her Scotch tape supply, so when the last roll ran out, she was told it would not be replaced. And all week she's been plotting, plotting, plotting ways to get her little hands on some of the sticky stuff.

The thumb addiction, however, is proving to be a real challenge.

The other night at bedtime the V-meister, whose been hard up for tape going on a week now, made the following suggestion:

"Daddy, maybe you could tape up my thumb? To help me stop sucking it?"

Now, you tell me, gentle reader: is the V-meister ready to kick the habit, or is she just jonesing for some Scotch tape?

Your guess is as good as mine.

V-Meister In Utero

First it's Scotch tape, then before you know it, it's Scotch.

I was a thumb sucker, myself. I can actually remember the time when I was battling my addiction. I'd be very good for hours at a time, then I'd sneak off to a closet or hide behind some furniture to get my fix. I must have been about 22. (Okay, I was 5.)

(And is that really V-Meister in the ultrasound picture? That is so damn cute.)

Yep, that is absolutely the V-meister in the photo! She's been at it since day one.

Tape or no tape - that is a hard question. I bet it would make sucking on the finger a lot harder, but she would be likely to take it off and use it. It would be fun to see what she does if you can watch her closely though!

That child is too smart, tape it up with scotch tape. You parents, are in trouble.

I confess to the thumb addiction myself. I think my parents finally curbed it by the time I was four-ish. Tabasco on the thumb. I don't recommend it, I've held it against them ever since (and just barely starting liking Tabasco a few years ago).

Aww. Even before she was born she was sucking that thumb. Too cute.

I'd say she is a smart little thing and figured out a way she might be able to get some tape. ;)

I had two "thumbie-babies". The pediatrician told me to put mittens on them at bedtime.
That DID NOT happen!

Awwww.

My kids are tapers too. I had to get the 9-pack rolls from the dollar store to try to cut costs!

Hmmmm - is the problem the sticky tape or the number of pictures?

Could you give her a portfolio album to show off her pictures - like artists do?

I sucked my thumb well into my teens - although not in view of anyone.

Oh, man. Sounds like it's time for a Scotch tape intervention. Maybe you need to wean her down to some masking tape first.

Only a few more years until you are being outsmarted by your kid on a regular basis! You're doing better than us though...mine is only 2 and he surprises us just about every day with his tricky ways.

As a former thumb-sucker, it is my crusade in life to stand up for all the little thumb-suckers who have come after me.

She'll stop when she's ready.

My evil parents did all sorts of crazy things to me to try to make me stop. NOTHING worked. They wasted a lot of money and mental angst, plus the scarred me for life.

One day, when I was seven, I up and decided I was done. I was too big to keep sucking my thumb and I never did after that day.

My little guy always sucked his thumb in utero too! So cute!
She's brilliant, by the way. Good strategy to get her hands on that tape!

I think she might be an evil genius.

She seems like a very practical kid to me.

I had a (crazy) boss who chewed on scotch tape when she was anxious or really wanted a cigarette...

Oh man, me and you both. My toddler was that way in utero as well and still is very 'oral'. People have recommended Tabasco sauce, but ummm, YUK.

my almost 10 year old still sucks his thumb, we've tried taping his thumb...he just goes upstairs and takes it off...we are at a loss as to how to make it end...on an odd note and twist, his 2 1/2 year old little brother is almost completely broken of the dreaded sucky...he wanted to be a thumb sucker, but i got him to take the paci instead, and i'm ever so thankful! good luck, and i hope you are more successful than i have been!
